Footy, Fun and Friendships: Rabbitohs Holiday Clinics Inspire Kids Across Sydney

Over three days during the school holidays, Souths Cares delivered a series of free Junior Holiday Clinics across Redfern, Maroubra, and Mount Druitt, engaging more than 160 children aged 5 to 12. These clinics provided a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where participants developed fundamental rugby league skills, built social connections, and received important health and wellbeing messages.

The provision of free, accessible programs such as these is particularly significant given that only 23% of Australian children aged 5–14 meet the recommended physical activity guidelines, with participation rates consistently lower among children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. By removing financial barriers, the Rabbitohs Holiday Clinics ensured that all children—regardless of their circumstances—had the opportunity to engage in physical activity, learn from positive role models, and experience a sense of belonging. Supported by Rabbitohs players Ben Lovett, Max McCarthy and club ambassadors Rhys Wesser and Yileen Gordon, the clinics contributed to healthier, more connected communities, highlighting the vital role sport plays in promoting equity, confidence, and long-term wellbeing.

Day 1 kicked off at the iconic Redfern Oval, the heart of Rabbitohs history. Young participants rotated through a series of skills stations focused on agility, passing, evasion, and teamwork. Guided by the Rabbitohs Wellbeing team and supported by current and former players—including a special appearance from NRL squad member Max McCarthy—the kids were inspired by positive role models both on and off the field. Smiles and laughter filled the ground as new friendships formed and confidence blossomed.

Day 2 moved east to Heffron Park, Maroubra, continuing the momentum. This clinic built on the success of previous years, blending physical activity with wellbeing messages and nutritional support. The day was made even more special by a visit from current NRL player Ben Lovett, who shared stories, encouragement, and joined in on the footy fun.

The final clinic was held at Kimberwalli in Mount Druitt, rounding out the week on a high. With footy drills, movement-based games, and plenty of encouragement from staff and volunteers, the atmosphere was filled with laughter, energy, and team spirit.

A highlight of all three days was the free lunch provided by Vinnies Vans, giving families a chance to connect while the kids refuelled.

Across all three days, the clinics delivered much more than footy drills. They provided a foundation for healthy habits, taught resilience through play, and helped build confidence and connection. Each child went home with a Rabbitohs junior pack—along with a full heart, a few grass stains, and likely some new mates.

Erin Geddes, Health and Wellbeing Programs Coordinator

“These clinics are all about more than just sport. They’re about building belonging, giving kids a positive experience during their holidays, and empowering them to live healthy, connected lives.”

The Rabbitohs and Souths Cares team extend their sincere thanks to all the staff, volunteers, partners, and sponsors who made the clinics possible. With more planned for the next school holidays, the message is clear: the Rabbitohs aren’t just building players—they’re building community.
